Trend Watch: Spring 2017

With the temperature back into the 40’s for the weekend – a heat wave in Wisconsin – I can’t help but start thinking about updating my wardrobe for Spring and moving all of my chunky sweaters and thick jackets to the back of my closet. With a weekend full of Spring cleaning ahead of me, I anticipate some real estate in my closet freeing up to make way for flowing short-sleeve or sleeveless shirts, cropped denim, and sandals. As I typically do around the beginning of each new season, I scour my favorite retail websites (and try to throw in a few new ones) to determine my favorite trends for the upcoming season. In doing so, I also think about how I can incorporate that trend into my personal style and make it my own. One of the first things I’ve noticed is that some of my favorite trends from the Fall are sticking around – lovable lace-ups, alluring cold-shoulder details, and feminine utility all have their place, though in a fresh way, for the Spring 2017 season.

A few of the newer trends or new takes on existing trends that I love are the prominence of interesting and slightly destructed denim, updates to the bell-sleeve, feminine utility, suede moving in on the velvet trend from Fall (more appropriate for the Spring temps anyways), and rose gold EVERYTHING. For my personal style, my love of incorporating rose gold accents or pretty much just the color pink in general has been a constant since before I could walk. Let’s take a look at these trends in more detail and some inspiration I’ve found on a few of my favorite sites for adopting these trends into my everyday style!

Denim Obsession

Working for the company that I do, I love that denim is really continuing to have it’s day in the fashion world. Whether it’s in a boyfriend fit or skinny with an open-hem or traditional destroyed knees, jeans continue to be my go-to bottoms for work and play. I love that Levi’s has introduced the classic 501’s in a new Skinny fit. With a slightly slimmer leg, it’s a fun play on the traditional boyfriend silhouette. If pants aren’t your thing, or the temps are too hot for a long bottom, adding in the denim sandals, lace-up shirt, or the ex-boyfriend trucker jacket over a cute dress are a few unique ways to add denim into any outfit.

Bold Sleeves

A carryover from the Fall season, I am still absolutely in love with the fresh takes on the big, billowy, bell-sleeves that are really coming to life in the trends for Spring. Moving from a simple peplum on each arm, I am starting to see ruffles, layers, tassels, and pleats being introduced to freshen up this trend. Whether it’s on this great military-inspired jacket or the simple, white cotton blouse, this style is on trend and getting me excited for Spring colors and warmer weather.

Feminine Utility

The utility, military, and functionality trend is continuing to be a big one, and one that I definitely love! The full-sleeve military inspired jacket with it’s bold sleeves fits into this category perfectly too! Though it can be easy to “overdue” or “over-use” trends in an outfit, the detail of the full-sleeve on a traditional military-inspired jacket is a nice juxtaposition of feminine detail on a more masculine design. The same can be said for the beautiful belted jacket blouse as well. I love the more structured or tailored look with the crisp lapel and belt on a silky soft fabric and ties on the elbows. I also love this twill boyfriend button-up, especially in this refreshing blue tone. Super soft and so functional.

Soft Suede

Keeping with the luxe fabrics, suede is making a big statement this Spring. Whether it’s real or faux, suede is playing in tops, bottoms, shoes, and accessories and I love it! I especially love how much fun you can incorporating various colors of suede into an outfit and how it can instantly elevate your look.

Rose Gold

Though I may not have saved the best trend for last, it certainly tops the list at my favorite. I don’t remember a day in my life where I didn’t like the color pink, in any hue whether it be a bold fuchsia or a subtle blush. I’ve always had a passion for shine and metallics, so incorporating a rose gold hue into a shiny clutch, sunglasses, earrings, or sneaker is a beautiful way to add glam and romance into any outfit.
